This is a graphic of the number of rocket attacks per month, as complied by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, and appearing on it's website:

Here are two opinion pieces presented side by side, as a way of expanding the terms of debate. First, a relatively unimportant Israeli columnist on Israel's YNet tells the world, and the Israeli peace camp - don't pity the Palestinians:
Just as a crying baby who only elicits pity will continue to cry, the citizens of Gaza will continue to cry out to the world instead of taking matters into their own hands. As long as they are told that they are helpless victims or mere pawns at the hands of terrorists, Gazans will only see their suffering prolonged.

To be brave, speak out for peace when your people are calling for war. In the pantheon of brave heroes we can list those who are demonstrating in Tel-Aviv, as in the video below. (The first few minutes are about the demonstration; after that it's still interesting, but relates to other important stories. Thanks to Cole from JVoices for this link.)

Some of you may remember that we held a contest that connected an amazing video: A Force More Powerful with a great organization: Nonviolence International. The winner was Lloyd Hamilton, who I've invited to speak his piece today, as a way of wishing all of us a peaceful new year:
We are one people related by blood back to the origional mother. There is only one race, the human race. There is only one Earth to nourish us all. We loose when violence takes hold of a population and killing becomes justified somehow. No State has the right to attack other States and no tribe has the right to attack another tribe.

al-Sarraj writes:
The children suffer the most, I think. They see the fear in their mothers' eyes. The image of their fathers as a source of security is shattered. Their fathers could not provide them with food, and now they are unable to protect them. The rockets will eventually stop flying, I am certain, but it may be too late for these children. To me, the chances seem great that they will join Hamas as they search for a replacement for the father figure, someone to provide and protect. In this way, Israeli actions will only strengthen Hamas.

Some clips from today's protest, for your viewing pleasure....

I attended the protest march in New York City today against the assault on Gaza. This protest, like many others in the past week, was called by a coalition of groups with International ANSWER at the center. On the one hand, I'm not a supporter of the politics of these groups. On the other, NO ONE ELSE is out there. As a compromise, I attended but partly as a citizen-journalist. With luck, I'll leave supporters of both Israeli and Palestine feeling awkward to have me attending their rallies....
